African American educator Juliette Derricotte was born in Athens, Georgia, on April 1, 1897. She is best known for her work as the Dean of Women at Fisk University. Her death in 1931, after she was denied care at a whites-only hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, sparked national outrage.
