Kiyoshi Kuromiya was born on May 5, 1943, in a Japanese internment camp at Heart Mountain in Wyoming. He was a prominent civil rights, antiwar, gay liberation, and HIV/AIDS activist. Kuromiya is best known for his leadership of three Philadelphia-based groups: the Gay Liberation Front, Critical Path, and ACT UP. He died on May 10, 2000. You can learn more about his life from an interview conducted by historian Marc Stein in 1997, a transcript of which is available as part of the Philadelphia LGBT History Project.
