Curtis Chin

Curtis Chin was born in 1968 to Chinese American parents in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in creative writing. Chin is the founding executive director of the Asian American Writers Workshop, which he created in New York City in 1991. Chin has written for CNN, Bon Appetit, the Detroit Free Press, and the Boston Globe and television programs on ABC, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon. Chin’s directorial work includes the short film The Big V (2008), the documentary Tested (2015), and the documentary short Dear Corky (2022). Chin has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundations for the Arts, and the San Diego Asian American Film Foundation. Chin’s 2021 memoir Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant explores his experiences growing up Chinese American and gay in Detroit during the 1980s.
