1965-05-29 First picket of White House by gay and lesbian activists.
A group of gay and lesbian activists mounted a picket line outside the White House. Carrying signs with such messages as “Fifteen Million U.S. Homosexuals Protest Federal Treatment,” they protested the exclusion of lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals from all federal employment and their categorization as security risks. Picket lines were mounted in front of other federal buildings that summer and fall.
1965-07-04 The first “Annual Reminder” is staged outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
The first “Annual Reminder” is staged outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia with conservatively dressed lesbians and gay men marching in respectful protest. This was a homophile-organized protest to raise attention to the discrimination that gays and lesbians faced.
1965-09-24 San Francisco Clergy Release "A Brief of Injustices," Attacking Police Abuse of Gays and Lesbians.
The Council on Religion and the Homosexual, which was a group of clergy in San Francisco, releases a report, “A Brief of Injustices,” that condemns society’s treatment of homosexuals. The report detailed a range of police abuses toward the gay and lesbian community and concluded “There is very little justice for the homosexual.” This was the first time a group of clergy in the U.S. came to the public defense of lesbians and gay men.
